Transformers Dark of the Overachieving

Ok I am gonna be frank this review will very likely get QUITE judgemental. Can’t help it didn’t like the cinematography(well by and large) and I felt some other things were lacking as well. But I’ll get to those later just prefacing this post with that comment.

Ok now to get started with the meat and gristle. I just picked up this movie the other day to have some fun with(I’d heard it was horrible and nothing can help with stress on occasion like a good dumb stupid movie) and well IMO they were half right. I found the movie overall to be rather entertaining however it also fell short in MANY areas that I feel it could have done much better in which I shall count down along with my views of the positives after my usual summary.

Now as this one begins we see clips of the moon landing and find out about how it was all really related to a Cybertronian ship crash landing on the moon. Skip forward to the “present” and we see Sam Witwicky is doing his best to find a job(yep saved the world 2 times and he can’t get a job which he also makes sure to mention like 5 times a scene at the start), Bumblebee is gone and he’s driving an old junker(same paint scheme as bumblebee of course),  and the Autobots are now working for the US government under even more scrutiny than before. As it turns out Sam also is o longer in a relationship with his old squeeze from the first two movies. As for the world in general not much is said. I mean some things indicate most of the world knows about the transformers by now yet other do not. Some indicate that only the government knows while others suggest that pretty much everyone knows about them(especially later in the movie). I mean it’s like they were writing for two separate scripts one post movie conflict and wanted to mix in something they had planned for a fourth movie and thought they needed padding or something. Either way doesn’t make much sense.

Anyways as the movie goes on we see same go through many very bizarre interviews(never had one myself so wouldn’t know how realistic they are. Oh and before anyone asks I DO have a job…wellll part time in the extreme but I do). Now he finally gets one and well things go south pretty soon after as I’m sure you can guess.

Now while all this is going on the Autobots are finding out more and more about earths history and it’s connection to a lost autobot ship. That as was carrying a  weapon that as Optimus puts it “Could have changed the fate of the war”(welll something to that effect at least).

Okay I’m gonna stop the summary there cause this is where it really picks up but suffice to say we got alot going on with more than a few things having changed from the previous ones.

As for my issues well here they are along with what I feel it may have done well.

Area one that I feel it failed is how they seemed to be attempting to be “artistic” with the camera angles. Doing things such as shaky camera and showing us a “first person” view of the military guys firing guns(on more than a few occasions) as well as trying  it seems to turn what should have been an easy dumb fun movie into something more(on occasions a stupid but fun movie is better than a good artistic movie at least IMO).

The second area is the ending it just felt I dunno rushed in a way. Thing is that it feels VERY inconclusive and while that IS becoming normal i feel that they could at least have added in a scene to show some degree of Sams relationship with his new girl and bumblebee. A state of the world after the fact kinda thing. Hell maybe pull a Transformers The Movies(1986 one) and have them do a speech about how “all need to be one” or in other words achieve a sense/actual unity(not  said unity not peace). Another way might have been to have the Autobots basically become their own group on earth.

Now my third and last gripe is how it feels VERY rushed at points and as if they decided to cut some scenes just to amke the movie shorte. I mean if they were worried about bathroom breaks they coulda just put in an intermission or two(for those who don;t know an intermission is where the movie takes a small break and you can rest use the restroom and even get more food and so on quite effective for longer movies like this if ya ask me) or even just let it run over 3 hours(like many people can handle that LOL).

I guess looking back the way Sam wound up also bothers me somewhat. I mean he’s basically being thrown around and one of his final lines kinda makes the whole movie lose some of it’s appeal to me. It’s overall message at least to me seems to be less one of great achievment and more of just accepting your place in life. Not of moving above but instead of just going with what the world has. In short a rather depressing mood. Now this is MY take and feel free to disagree we all have our own views on such things after all.

I also did not like how they decided to focus so much more on sex and the female lead(who TBH I do NOT find that attractive sorry people but I don’t have the stereotypical taste  in beauty). And not only that i feel it detracted from what honestly could have IMO been a movie of quite high renown.

As for the positives. I must say I rather liked their covering of certain key events(ones that i will not mention for those who have yet to see it but lets just say a few episodes of the classic series are replayed and exiles become exiles again). It would have been nice IMO to see an AU version of this in fact where things didn’t work out so well and the Decepticons won.  I could even come up with a potential sequel outta that(was coming up with it while watching the movie LOL). Other than that though this scene was rather well done if parts of it suffer from the poor continuity/writing I mentioned before but overall it’s done quite nicely.

Overall though I’d say it was a fun watch but the first two were MUCH better. I also am not sure I would recommend it. As part of a dumb movie marathon I’d say number 2 works best and overall I’d say if you want stupid fun I’d recommend Dragonball Evolution over this(R.I.P. any chance of getting regular readers from this LOL) .  However the fact is that I honestly feel this movie COULD  been not just good but great a classic in fact. IF IT HAD BEEN DONE RIGHT. Alot of good potential points were missed alot of nice things were glossed over as well as MANY potentially apt to modern society subjects and messages were skipped and instead it was made as a dumb and fanservicey movie in place of a potentially great movie all for money.

Now again your mileage may vary and you may like it.

KIba the little fang that ended too soon.

Ok now sorry for the delay to anyone who actually reads this crummy ol’ blog o’ mine. RL stuff such as  a cold that was going around had to work and alot of other things going on. So umm yeah onto the review.

Now I’m gonna warn you MAJOR spoilers coming up ahead. Well if you haven’t seen the first 26 episodes at least.

Okay this sucks lost what I typed originally but oh well here goes let’s see if i can’t make something even better.

Alright now by this point we’ve seen alot of shit, met a decent number of the main cast and gotten glimpses of some of the future ones as well. Now this segment shall pick up upon the area that my other one left off on which is an ABYSMALLY short tournament arc(as in the shortest I can recall seeing by this point in time). Now sadly because of my attempts to remain at least mostly spoiler free doesn’t leave me much room. But I WILL say these things. This show only gets darker from here. You will see Neotopia show just how truly depraved it’s “Absolute Law” is as well as seeing the true goals of Hugh(not to mention why the hell he wears that mask) as well as of the nobles in Tusk. While at the same time we find out more about Sagiri’s people, the Key Spirits and even a few new tribes. Hell  Zed even meets his mother again for all it’s worth(I don’t think it spoils too much to say she’s as messed up as Light Yagami at the end of Death Note in more than a few ways). Spoiler wise I’m sorry to say that’s all I’m giving ya gotta watch it to find out more LOL.

However since sadly I can’t in good conscience really expound on or reveal too much more(for what should be rather obvious reasons) I will say a few things as well as TL;DR to finish up. This series is dark and gritty in alot of ways with alot of death for main characters and those they care about. In some ways it’s very Kill em All(which is kinda funny since even Tomino doesn’t pull this kinda crap anymore).  However it also has it’s charms and sweet points…That are often all Tominoed up LOL(seriously look up Yoshiyuki Tomino if you don’t know of him the guy is FAMOUS for death) and quite sadly it starts to feel quite rushed around episode 40 or so, what with the mass introduction of ALOT of new characters and plot points in VERY quick order (if it were me I would’ve tried to wrangle another 2-10 episodes outta it just to have it feel more refined but what can ya do LOL). However I would say it is still quite a nicely done series with a nice bit of depth especially for a shounen series. Though TBH the ending left me personally wanting. Not to spoil any big events but suffice to say it’s one of those endings that suggests the actual end with all the subtlety of a blast from the Wing Zero’s Dual Buster Rifle(that thing can one shot a colony in case you didn’t know) yet doesn’t show you anything of real substance. I personally have always found such endings quite vexing(mainly because I want some goddamn closure of a guaranteed type since I tend to be focused on possibilities I prone to doubting even such obvious indicators LOL).

Overall though I’d say I found the series much more enjoyable than I recalled and I would  definitely recommend it to those looking for something darker and more Tomino in their shounen fare as well as a fun ride. Though this series isn’t for everyone by any means. ESPECIALLY those looking for a lighthearted experience. Expect some drama and by some I mean ALOT.

Well that’s it for this show I hope you liked this and if it sound interesting go ahead and look her up. next up  will probably be one of these things.

Infinite Stratos

B Gata H Kei

The Legend of Legendary Heroes

or

Zero no Tsukaima F

But who knows. I am going to be picking up TERA soon(fucking gameplay is too goddamn good I couldn’t resist even though i swore I wouldn’t get it due to censoring). But yeah i hope to have things done and posted sooner than this time and pick up the pace but who knows what the future holds right LOL.
